Throughout the exercise, the paternal and maternal sides are kept completely separate. The paternal family history is entered from the blue cover, and the maternal history from the pink cover. Each side includes a six-generation pedigree chart, pages for recording data of members of each main line marriage per generation, associated blank pages for entering notes describing sources of data, methodology for finding the information, and family recollections of the ancestors in each generation, There is also a system for recording re-marriages or new partnerships.
All main-line individuals in marriages are allocated unique references to match entries in the record books pages with those on the pedigree charts. The referencing system provides an automatic system for filing away related documents and information on ancestors filed away elsewhere. The record pages also includes a facility for recording references of the 1841 to 1921 Censuses and the 1939 Register interrogated in respect of appropriate ancestors filed elsewhere.
The publication can be used as an exercise book for new researchers attending beginner’s courses organised by local family history societies, branches of the University of the Third Age (U3A) or other similar organisations.
The book is an ideal present to give to older children and young adults to encourage them to develop an interest in the hobby of family history while older relatives are still around to assist and recall stories about their ancestors.
