Ordnance Survey Folded Map - ONE INCH SERIES Sheet E026
Here is information about Sheet 26: One Inch Sheet 26 Lower Weardale & West Durham 1903 - published 2001; intro by David Butler. ISBN.978-1-84151-235-8 This One Inch Ordnance Survey map covers the western area of County Durham, stretching from Stanhope eastward to Durham City itself (which is split by the right hand margin), and from Lanchester southward to Bishop Auckland. It is an area of rich contrasts, with the Wear Valley meandering through the map; the western part of the map is partly moorland, while everywhere there are industrial railways, collieries and steel works, long since gone. On the reverse we include a detailed map of Brancepeth Colliery. It is not possible to list the many hamlets, farmsteads and other topographical features shown on these maps. However, you may find it useful if we list the towns and principal villages or church parishes that are included on this map. Links are given for those for which detailed large-scale maps are also available.
